It worked yesterday and now nothing can find it. I get the printer back on your Wi-Fi and printing from every computer and phone that needs it.

01What I check

Why printers vanish.

Most printers that “stopped working” are fine. They've lost the network.

  1. A new router.

Your provider swapped the router, and the Wi-Fi name or password changed. The printer is still looking for the old one.

  2. Laptop and printer on different networks.

Some routers run two Wi-Fi networks, or a guest network. If the laptop is on one and the printer on the other, they can't see each other.

  3. A driver or app that broke after an update.

I remove the broken one and set it up cleanly, so it's less likely to break again next month.

  4. A new printer out of the box.

I set it up on your Wi-Fi, connect every computer, phone and tablet that needs it, and print a test page with you.

  5. Scanning to the computer.

If you scan letters or forms, I set that up too and show you where the scans end up.

02Visit or remote

Best done in the room.

Printer setup works best on a home visit, with the printer, the router and your computer in front of me. If the printer is already on the network and it's just one laptop that can't find it, I can sometimes fix that remotely for £30/hour.

Before I arrive

Find the Wi-Fi name and password, usually on a card or the back of the router. Check the printer has paper and ink, so a failed test page means the setup and not the cartridge.

Typical jobs
JobUsually
Printer back on the network, or a new printer set up£35–£65 (one to two hours)
Wi-Fi dead spot fixed while I'm there£35–£65 (one to two hours)

These are just the hourly rate added up — £35 for the first hour, then £15 for each extra half hour. I'll tell you the likely figure before I start.

  • Ink, cables or a new printer, if needed, are quoted before I buy anything.
  • I don't repair the inside of printers. If it's broken, I'll tell you whether a replacement makes more sense.
  • Elsewhere in Brighton & Hove: same rates. I'll tell you any travel charge on the phone before booking.

04Questions

Printer questions.

My printer is not connecting to the Wi-Fi. Can you fix it?

Usually, yes. Most of the time the Wi-Fi name or password has changed, often after a new router, and the printer needs reconnecting. I do that, then reconnect every computer and phone that prints.

Do you do printer setup in Brighton, or only Saltdean?

Both. I'm based in Saltdean and cover Rottingdean, Telscombe Cliffs, Ovingdean, Peacehaven and Woodingdean too. Further into Brighton & Hove the rates are the same; I'll confirm any travel charge on the phone before booking.

Can you help me choose a new printer?

Yes. I'll ask what you print and how often, and suggest something simple that suits you. I'll set it up when it arrives.

Do you repair printers?

Not inside the printer. Jammed mechanisms and broken parts need a workshop or a replacement, and for many home printers a replacement is cheaper. I'll tell you which.

How much is a printer setup?

Usually £35–£65 (one to two hours): £35 for the first hour, then £15 per extra half hour. No contract, and if the same problem comes back within 14 days, the return visit is on me.

05Where

Close to home.

I'm based in Saltdean, so home visits in Rottingdean, Telscombe Cliffs, Ovingdean, Woodingdean and Peacehaven are only a few minutes away. Further into Brighton & Hove, the rates are the same.
