Privacy notice
What happens to your details when you use this website or get in touch, in plain English.

Who I am
Salt I.T. is my home IT support service, based in Saltdean, East Sussex. I'm Simon, and I decide how the details you share through this website are used. In data protection law, that makes me the “controller”.
If you have a question about your details, or want to use any of the rights below, email support@saltit.co.uk or call 07843 468904.
What I collect, and why
If you send the contact form
The form asks for:
- your name
- your phone number
- where you are (the area you pick from the list)
- what's gone wrong, in your own words
- whether you're booking for someone else
I use these to ring you back, give you a likely cost and arrange a visit or remote session. You don't have to use the form, but I need a name and a number to call you back. If you're booking for someone else, such as a parent, please only tell me what I need to help them.
Lawful basis: you've asked me to take steps before agreeing a job with you (the “contract” basis). If your note isn't about booking a job, I rely on my legitimate interest in replying to people who get in touch.
How the form reaches me: when you press “Send to Simon”, the form goes to this website's server, which is hosted by Vercel. The server passes it to Web3Forms, a form service, which emails it to support@saltit.co.uk. If Web3Forms won't accept it from the server, your browser sends the same details to Web3Forms directly. If that doesn't work either, your own email app opens with the message ready to send, and nothing goes anywhere until you press send.
If you call, WhatsApp or email me
I'll see your phone number or email address and whatever you tell me, and I use it to help you. The lawful basis is the same as for the form. Calls go through your own phone provider. WhatsApp messages are sent through WhatsApp, under WhatsApp's own terms and privacy policy.
Visit counts: Cloudflare Web Analytics
Every page uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page views and check how quickly pages load. Cloudflare says it doesn't use cookies or local storage for analytics, and it doesn't collect visitors' personal data. It's on whether you click Accept or Reject on the cookie banner.
Lawful basis: my legitimate interest in knowing that the site works and that people can find it.
Google Analytics, only if you click Accept
The banner at the bottom of the page asks whether I can use Google Analytics. It only loads if you click Accept. It sets cookies and tells me how the site is used, so I can improve it.
If you click Reject, or don't choose, Google Analytics doesn't load and doesn't set its cookies. Your browser remembers your choice (in its local storage) so the banner doesn't keep asking.
Lawful basis: your consent, which you can withdraw at any time (see “Changing your cookie choice” below).
Who else handles your details
These services handle details on my behalf, only for the reasons above:
- Vercel hosts this website and runs the server that receives the contact form.
- Web3Forms delivers the contact form to my inbox.
- My email provider holds the support@saltit.co.uk mailbox where enquiries arrive.
- Cloudflare provides the cookie-free visit counts.
- Google provides Google Analytics, only if you click Accept.
If you contact me on WhatsApp, WhatsApp handles that message under its own terms.
I don't make automated decisions about you.
How long I keep your details
I keep your details only as long as I need them to deal with your enquiry and any job that follows, and for any period the law requires (for example, tax records).
Your rights
Under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR), you have the right to:
- Access: ask for a copy of the personal details I hold about you.
- Rectification: ask me to correct details that are wrong, or complete details that are incomplete.
- Erasure: ask me to delete your details. This applies in some circumstances, and I may need to keep some records, such as those the law requires.
- Restriction: ask me to limit how I use your details in some circumstances, for example while I check whether they're accurate.
- Objection: object to me using your details where I rely on legitimate interests.
- Portability: where I rely on your consent or on the contract basis, ask for the details you gave me in a form you can reuse elsewhere.
- Withdraw consent: change your mind about Google Analytics at any time.
To use any of these rights, email support@saltit.co.uk or call 07843 468904.
Changing your cookie choice
Your browser remembers whether you clicked Accept or Reject. There isn't a button on the site to reopen the banner, so to change your mind, clear the cookies and site data for saltit.co.uk in your browser's settings. That also removes any Google Analytics cookies, and the banner will ask again on your next visit.
Making a complaint
If you're unhappy with how I've used your details, please tell me first and I'll try to put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK's data protection regulator:
