01Do this first

If it's happening now.

Four steps, in this order. None of them need any computer knowledge.

  1. Switch the computer off.

    Hold the power button if you have to. Leave it off, and unplug the network cable if there is one, until I've seen it.

  2. Call your bank if money or card details were involved.

    Do this before anything else. Use the number on the back of your card, not one from the pop-up or the caller.

  3. Don't call back the number on screen.

    Microsoft, BT and your bank don't ring out of the blue to fix your computer, and real warnings never ask you to phone a number.

  4. Then call me.

    Tell me what happened, in any order. I'll give you a likely band before I start.

02Visit or remote

After a scam, I come to you.

If someone has already had remote access, I won't clean it up remotely. I come to your home, work on the machine in front of you, and explain each step. Then I check what they could have reached: remote-access tools they left behind, viruses and junk, saved passwords, and your email, because email resets everything else. I help you change the important passwords and switch on two-step sign-in where it helps. I will never call you out of the blue asking to connect.

Before I arrive

Leave the computer off. If you can, write down roughly what happened and when: what the caller or pop-up said, and anything you typed in or paid. Don't worry if you can't remember it all.

These are just the hourly rate added up — £35 for the first hour, then £15 for each extra half hour. I'll tell you the likely figure before I start.

  • I can't reverse payments. If money or card details were involved, your bank is the first call.
  • If the same problem comes back within 14 days, the return visit is on me.

Scam questions.

Do you do virus removal in Brighton as well as Saltdean?

Yes. Virus removal and scam clean-ups are the same price across Saltdean, Rottingdean, Telscombe Cliffs, Ovingdean, Peacehaven, Woodingdean and Brighton & Hove. I'll confirm any travel charge on the phone before booking.

“Microsoft” called and I let them on my computer. What now?

Switch the computer off and leave it off. If you paid anything or shared card or bank details, call your bank first on the number on your card. Then call me. Microsoft doesn't make unexpected calls to fix your computer.

A pop-up says my computer is infected and to call a number. Is it real?

No. Real security warnings never ask you to phone anyone. Don't call the number. Close the browser, or switch the computer off if it won't close, and ring me if it comes back.

Someone has got into my email. Can you help?

Yes. I'll help you get back in, change the password, check nothing is being forwarded to the scammer, and set up two-step sign-in so it's harder to happen again. I'll also tell you who's worth warning.

How much does a scam clean-up cost?

Usually £65–£95 (two to three hours), depending on how far it went. I'll give you a likely band before I start. If the same problem comes back within 14 days, the return visit is on me.

Close to home.

I'm based in Saltdean, so home visits in Rottingdean, Telscombe Cliffs, Ovingdean, Woodingdean and Peacehaven are only a few minutes away. Further into Brighton & Hove, the rates are the same.
