01What I check

Where the Wi-Fi goes wrong.

Most slow Wi-Fi isn't the broadband. Before I change anything, I work out which of these it is.

  1. Is it the line, or the house?

I test the speed at the router, then in the rooms that struggle. Fast at the router and slow upstairs means the problem is inside your home, not with your provider. Slow everywhere, and I'll write down what to tell your provider so the call is short.

  2. The router's in the wrong place.

Behind the TV, in a cupboard, on the floor at the far end of the hall. Moving it a few metres or raising it up can fix a dead spot for nothing.

  3. Thick walls and long houses.

Extensions, bungalows and back bedrooms a long way from the router often need a second access point. I'll tell you whether an extender or mesh Wi-Fi is worth it, and set it up if you go ahead.

  4. Too many neighbours on one channel.

In flats and terraces your router competes with everyone else's. I move it to a quieter channel and check the settings your provider left on.

  5. Smart TVs, streaming sticks and speakers.

Once the Wi-Fi is sorted, I reconnect the TV, streaming stick, speaker or printer that kept dropping off, so everything works before I leave.

02Visit or remote

Wi-Fi needs a visit.

Wi-Fi problems live in the walls and corners of your home, so I come to you. Remote help can't walk round the house checking the signal room by room. In Saltdean, Rottingdean, Telscombe Cliffs, Ovingdean, Peacehaven and Woodingdean I'm a few minutes away; elsewhere in Brighton & Hove the rates are the same.

Before I arrive

Note which rooms drop out, and roughly when. Find the router and the Wi-Fi password, usually on a card or the back of the router. That's all I need.

03Prices

04Questions

Wi-Fi questions.

Do you give Wi-Fi help in Brighton, or just Saltdean?

Both. I'm based in Saltdean, so Rottingdean, Telscombe Cliffs, Ovingdean, Woodingdean and Peacehaven are a few minutes away. Further into Brighton & Hove the rates are the same; I'll confirm any travel charge on the phone before booking.

My speed test is fine, so why is the Wi-Fi so slow?

A speed test next to the router measures your broadband. Slow Wi-Fi in the back room is usually distance, walls or a crowded channel inside the house. That's the part I fix on a visit.

Do I need mesh Wi-Fi?

Not always. Moving the router or changing a setting fixes plenty of dead spots for nothing. If your home really needs a second access point, I'll explain the options in plain English and quote the parts before I buy anything.

Is it my broadband provider's fault?

Sometimes. I test at the router first. If the line itself is slow or dropping, I'll write down what to tell your provider. If the line is fine, the fix is inside your home and I can usually do it on the visit.

Can you get the smart TV back online?

Yes. Smart TVs, streaming sticks and speakers usually come back once the Wi-Fi is sorted. I reconnect them before I leave.

05Where

Close to home.

I'm based in Saltdean, so home visits in Rottingdean, Telscombe Cliffs, Ovingdean, Woodingdean and Peacehaven are only a few minutes away. Further into Brighton & Hove, the rates are the same.
